Formaggio Kitchen has been an institution in Cambridge, Massachusetts for nearly 50 years –“a gourmand’s paradise” doubling as a neighborhood grocer. Nationally, we are best known for our cheese selection, which includes many exclusive items imported directly from farms in Europe. Locally, we are equally well known for our kitchen and bakery production including sandwiches, panini and nightly dinners as well as cakes, cookies and a variety of other sweets – all made in house, from scratch and using the best (often local) ingredients. We also stock a wide range of other delicious foodstuffs, including: charcuterie, produce, baked goods, prepared foods, coffee, tea, chocolates, bread, sweets, honey, preserves, wine, beer, olive oil, vinegar and other pantry staples.

Openings at Huron Village:

Cheesemonger

We are looking for a full-time cheesemonger with supervisory experience to work closely with existing staff to help us provide delicious cheese and exceptional service to our customers. 

As a Formaggio Kitchen cheesemonger, you not only have access to 200-300 different types of cheeses (many of them exclusive to us in the US), you also have access to hundreds of other specialty products throughout the shop that have been hand selected by our lead buyers from across the globe. With nearly 50 years of experience in the industry, Formaggio Kitchen has developed close relationships with producers domestically and abroad which allows our cheesemongers unmatched access to their expertise. As a company we encourage staff to take ownership of ideas and initiatives, and we are committed to providing support and resources to allow our staff to achieve their goals. This has included farm visits, access to in-depth product training with producers, development of new programs and marketing initiatives within the store (to name a few). 

A full-time cheesemonger's work schedule requires flexibility to work evenings and weekends. Additional qualities we are looking for:

  • At least one year in a supervisory or managerial capacity in a specialty food retail or wholesale environment preferred
  • Experience with retail POS systems / computers

COMPENSATION: $18-$24 hour, depending on experience

Visual Storyteller

Formaggio Kitchen is looking for a creative individual with a passion for food, storytelling, and customer service to join our media and marketing team. This is an in-person position based in Cambridge, MA, with a minimum of ~18-21 hours per week. More hours could be available if willing to be crossed-trained in other departments at the store.
 
Expectations/skills needed:
 
Photography
  • Experience taking/editing photos on an iPhone 
  • A creative/artistic eye for photographing (knowing what lighting looks best, angles to shoot at, rule of thirds, etc.) 
  • Product photos for the website (working with a team member to find the correct products in the store) 
  • Photos of staff, products, and occasionally attending after-hours or off-site events for social media
  • Occasional styled photography of food, gifts, etc.
Videography
  • Experience shooting iPhone videos and using a wireless microphone
  • Experience editing videos (Edits, CapCut, Splice, etc.) 
  • Coordinating with on-camera talent to schedule shoots
  • Comfortable directing and prompting on-camera talent 
  • A critical eye and ear for determining if footage is usable or needs to be reshot
  • Ability to come up with creative ideas for videos 
Nice to have, but not essential:
  • Creative, storytelling, and technical writing skills for marketing copy and social media captions
  • An eye for digital design
  • Technical digital design experience (Canva, Photoshop)
  • Knowledge, interest, and/or experience with the gourmet food and/or cheese world 
  • Comfortable being on camera and/or using their voice as a VO
  • Knowledgeable about social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok) and social media trends 
Please note this is only available as an on-site position, no remote work is available. There could be more hours if the candidate were open to working in other departments at the shop.

Compensation: This position is hourly, $20-$22hr., commensurate with experience.

Produce Team Member

Formaggio Kitchen's produce department works with many small farms both in California and within New England. We focus on organic and sustainably grown fruits and vegetables, and work hard to source the best produce available and sell it in the best condition possible.

Typical daily tasks include stocking, culling, receiving deliveries, placing orders, and assisting customers with produce questions.

Qualities we are looking for:

  • Shrewd decision making and creative problem solving, to keep produce loss low and displays bountiful
  • Conscientious and hands-on, to order successfully
  • Good aesthetic sense and merchandising
Our current scheduling needs are afternoon/closing shifts on Sunday, Monday, Thursday and Friday. This is a very physically demanding position - must be able to lift 50 pounds regularly.

COMPENSATION: This position is hourly non-exempt, varies depending on experience $17 - 19/hr

Front of House Team Member

As a Formaggio Kitchen cashier, you will be required to:
  • Give exemplary customer service to our discerning customers
  • Handle money and take payments through our POS with accuracy
  • Help to keep the floor and cold cases stocked with products for purchase
In a Supervisory role, you would be required to:
  • Open the shop in the morning and/or close the shop at night
  • Handle customer complaints, returns, requests
  • Recognize what needs to be done/stocked in each part of the store. Compile a list of tasks and delegate
  • Understand and enforce store policies
  • Be able to react calmly in emergency situations
We have both part-time and full-time positions available, with a preference for weekend and closing availability. Applicants must be friendly and hard-working.
 
Requirements:
  • Ability to stand for a full shift
  • Occasional bending, twisting, reaching and crouching
  • Ability to regularly lift 10 pounds, occasionally 20
  • Ability to walk up and down stairs to storage areas
Supervisory Requirements:
  • Minimum of 2 years of retail or restaurant experience
  • Extensive food knowledge and a thirst for learning
