Summer in a Bottle: Ameztoi Rosé - Formaggio Kitchen

Summer in a Bottle: Ameztoi Rosé

This wine captures the essence of Summer and SeaWhen Valerie, Ihsan and I visited the Ameztoi Winery in October of last year, rosé season was months away. Now a cool but sunny April has arrived and with it has come our first shipment of Ameztoi Rubentis Rosado*.

Ameztoi is one among a cluster of wineries perched high in the hills of the Getaria province of Spain, overlooking the Atlantic ocean. On a clear day, you can see the city of San Sebastián from Ameztoi’s vineyards.

Ignacio Ameztoi is a 7th generation winemaker. He and his enormous German Shepherd gave us a personal tour of the family winery – a pretty building completely surrounded by grapevines with a stunning view of the Atlantic. Ameztoi’s vines are quite old, many 150 years or older.

The local grapes include the white varietal Hondarribi Zuri and the red varietal Hondarribi Beltza (Beltza’ means ‘black’ in Basque). The Rubentis Rosado is made up of equal parts of both grapes. Ocean breezes bring a salty tang to wines from this region and the Rubentis is no exception. It also carries the aroma and flavor of tart, wild strawberries and a lime-like acidity. All of this, with a bit of natural spritziness and you have a wonderful wine for warm, sunny days.

Ameztoi vineyard offers salty breezes and a gorgeous ocean viewThis wine is fairly limited in quantity, so grab a few bottles now to refresh yourself on those soon-to-be-here (we hope) hot summer days. Remember, when the Rosado runs out, we always have Ignacio’s white – the briny and zippy Txakolina. Both are delicious.
