Perhaps the very first American made cheese to catch the attention of cheese lovers on both sides of the Atlantic was the original Vermont Shepherd cheese. For years, the cheese was known simply as Vermont Shepherd but in 2012, they adopted the name Verano, which means summer in Spanish and accurately represents the cheese in that it is only made using summer milk.

Styled after the French brebis cheeses made in the Pyrenees mountains, this aged, raw milk sheep cheese is made in Putney, Vermont.  It has a golden brown rind and rustic shape. The texture is smooth and creamy, the flavor is sweet and earthy with hints of clover, mint and thyme.  This is a rich and tangy cheese that makes a great pairing with nutty brown beers.

This is a seasonal cheese made in limited quantity. This cheese is generally available July - January.
