The Saladini mezzaluna (translates to half-moon) might take a bit of getting used to. It is perhaps the most striking utensil in our kitchen, and it was perhaps a bit intimidating when we first started using it. However, very soon after putting it to use and mastering our mincing technique, we found that this beautiful knife is just as much a well-designed tool as it is an art piece. The perfect tool for mincing garlic, herbs and vegetables. The handle is made of beautiful Italian ox horn.
While dining in Verona at 12 Apostoli, we fell in love with the tableware and had to track it down. It turned out to be hand made by the craftsmen of the Saladini family in Scarperia just north of Florence. Scarperia is an ancient medieval village built by the Florentine Republic in the 14th century. It is known as "the town of knives" and justifiably so, as the art of manufacturing fine knives has been ongoing since the village was first settled. Their knives use the highest quality stainless steel and natural materials such as ox horn, water buffalo horn and Tuscan olive wood for their handles.
